I have two sixth grades classes, each one reading a different novel this month. One class is continuing to read A Wrinkle in Time, a fantasy novel that they all seem to be enjoying. It is a little time traveling, a little bit of mystery, but mostly how three young people put their skills together and pull off a “rescue” mission. I have so much fun with this novel. My other class is finishing up Tuck Everlasting and has decided that drinking from the “fountain of youth” might not be such a good idea after all. We will then start reading The Westing Game which is always popular with middle school readers.

Spring is just around the corner for all of us so I am having my students read novels that are fast paced! I have three different seventh grade classes, so ask your child what he/she is reading and join in / start a nightly discussion on our book. One of my classes is reading Redwall, a mighty story about Matthias, while small, accomplishes big things for his family and friends. Another class is reading a S.E. Hinton novel, entitled That Was Then, This is Now – perfect for my ever changing middle school students. Finally, the third class will be reading a science fiction novel entitled, The White Mountains, by John Christopher which is very thought provoking – perfect for dinner table conversations. I would love some feedback on what they say to you!

The Eighth graders are reading To Kill a Mockingbird (TKAM), an awesome novel, and my favorite book of all time! I am enjoying all of our heated discussions and would love for you to ask your child what they think about this novel. As you remember, (for me it is “back in the day” as I am reminded repeatedly from my students) a book written and made for discussions on many levels. I think it is still current for discussions very popular in today’s world.
