Meet Scarlet
She is a Mexican Red-Knee
Tarantula
Scarlet was a Christmas gift from my son, Brad. She has a bald spot because she was using her back leg to "flick" hair at me when I picked her up. This "flicking hairs" is a defense tarantulas use when stressed.
Miss Muffet
Meet Miss Muffet - 1C's class pet. Miss Muffet is a Chilean Rose tarantula. She has a rose-color appearance. Miss Muffet is very docile. I have had Miss Muffet for 5 years. She is NOT poisonous to humans. I have read that tarantula bites are no worse than a bee sting. I am the only person who handles Miss Muffet and she has never been aggressive or tried to bite. However, the hairs on a tarantula can break off with the slightest touch and itch terribly. Tarantula hairs use to be used in the making of itching powder. Miss Muffet molts about one time every year. She will flip over on her back and gradually work her way out of her old skin and emerge in a shiny new covering. Molting is a very dangerous, traumatic, and exhausting ordeal for any tarantula. Miss Muffet is my third tarantula. I lost my first two while they were molting. Miss Muffet eats crickets. She will quickly leap onto her prey and stick her hollow, furry fangs into the cricket. Venom is pumped in and liquefies the cricket's insides. Then Miss Muffet eats her bug soup.
