Art - Steve Hammer Print E-mail

This is a page that will give everyone a better opportunity to see what makes me tick.  I am an artist.  Most of my work is impressionistic, but I do strive for realism from time to time.  I first became interested in the art when I was in grade school.  I had a magnificent teacher that designed projects for me to work on outside of class because she knew I had a passion in my heart.  I later went on to study art further in high school.  It was there that my talent began to develop.  I was mainly interested in photography.  To this day, I keep a camera close by at all time because I never know what might happen or what I might see.  I began studying journalism, which at the time was not an expressive enough art form for me to truly shine.  I knew that I wanted to do something with art still, so I began to paint again.  I had not painted since high school.  These paintings lead to an intense year and a half of studying the human figure.  I spent most of this time in anatomy classes and studios.  My figures were all larger than life drawings.  I mainly work on paper that is at least eight feet in one direction.  The intense processes of figure drawing lead me to printmaking.  I started to work small, about six inches by six inches max.  This is a very process oriented art form that takes time and precision.  Each color is applied with a different plate.  I also began to study ceramics.  I found that sculpture is an art form where I can be the most expressive.  I started working with the figure, and later moved to natural creations.  I do all of my sculpture out of my home.

While I was studying art, I met my wife.  She is my best friend and my hardest critic.  We were married in the summer of 2003, and had our 1st child on December 16th 2006.  We spend most of our free time with friends and love to travel.  She is originally from Banbury, a small town in England, so we often travel to England and Europe in the summers.

While I am not teaching, I enjoy being outside.  This is where I have gotten most of my inspiration for my art lately.  I enjoy rock climbing, and have traveled North America doing so.  I have been all over Canada, the Mexican Pacific coast, The High Sierras and Rockies, and the eastern coast of the U.S.  Climbing is a true passion.  I also enjoy fly-fishing, something my Dad and I share.  We like to fish the White and Norfork rivers in Arkansas, and the Watauga in Eastern TN.

I hope that this gives you a better insight into who I am in and out of school.  I also hope that you have enjoyed the images that I have provided.  These pictures show my artwork, the people I love, and the things that I love to do.  Have a wonderful rain or shine day, and come back soon to check for new updates.
